Elvis - 56: In The Beginning (VHS, 1987). Levon Helm masterfully narrates the early stages of Elvis' explosive career in "Elvis 56." There are beautiful, candid photos I've never seen in any other format, and for a few moments, you will believe you are right there with the young man as a new kind of fame is about to seize hold of him, and never let him go. Whatever he became after the Army, the death of his beloved mother, his addiction to prescription drugs..... You see the innocence that established his legacy. He was only as "prejudiced" and faulty as a human being as any of the rest of us, who have grown up in the shadows of the old South. You can hear the longing in Levon Helm's voice: it represents the yearning Elvis felt as a young man, to know his god's global world in a curious fashion. He wanted so much more, than he ever achieved. And this icon accomplished more than he ever realized. In excellent condition.
