Hatched in an incubator and hand-raised. Kept outdoors during the daytime and brought in for the cooler nights. $150 Rehoming fee and the tortoise is all yours. Size: Currently around 3-4 Inches in length. Grows to a perfect mid-sized tortoise (about a foot long). They remain a size that most can handle and show a unique design of colors on heads and feet.
Enclosure: This is the most important, and most costly step to ensure your tortoise's success. Best kept outdoors in an enclosure they cannot escape from. Be sure to set up appropriate heating in cold weather. As hatchlings, they should be kept in an enclosure with a top to secure from predators. Increase in size as they grow. If kept indoors, supply appropriate UVB to prevent MBD. Feel free to discuss enclosures with me, I can give my best recommendations based on nearly 15 years of experience.
During the upcoming winter months, I recommend bringing the tortoise inside at night as it gets a bit too cold for them. Generally when temperatures are below 60, I bring them inside.
Diet: Always ready to eat and rarely turn down a meal. All healthy eaters, they enjoy a mix of leafy greens (Collard, mustard, dandelion), cactus, Mazuri pellets, carrots, squash, hibiscus leaves & flowers, petunias, and almost any non-citrus fruit. Supply calcium & vitamins. Variety is key, it's not as simple as providing a bowl of cat/dog food & leaving it be.
Water: Small shallow water dishes should be placed in enclosures. As yearlings, they should be soaked twice a week for about 10 minutes to ensure full hydration.
